Koi Shadow Box

Framed by a large shadow box, a ceramic koi fish swims underneath a sheet of handmade waterglass. The fish swims in a bowl glazed in Tenmoku Gold. This beautiful glaze shows gold-like speckles reminiscent of plankton. The bowl has roots crawling on the bottom in relief. The sides of the shadow box are in red to pick up on the color of the fish.

After moving back to California I discovered the amazing Japanese gardens at San Mateo’s Central Park. I often spend time there with my family watching the gardener feed the fish. This is the type of place where time seems to stop while watching nature in its smallest details. I wanted to capture the beauty and tranquility of the koi pond I so much enjoy in my art so that someone may take it home with them.

After building my first Cerami Koi Ponds, I sought to translate the idea into wall art. Rummaging through a stained glass shop in Berkeley I came across clear glass that looked like ripples of water and instantly had the idea. It also gave me an excuse to do some carpentry, another one of my passions, and the build shadow boxes.
